The Club
History
The club has been running since 1990 or so
when it relocated from Lagoon Park Speedway. It constructed a small track
in front of the Italio Club and used the large grandstand for spectators.
The club has received several grants in the past to put in a electric pump
and reticulation to allow for watering of the track. In 2002 the club run
motocross under lights with huge success but has not bee able to since
then. The club received a grant while occupying land at the Italio club to
move the large grandstand off the field to make to in front to the north of
the large pavilion and thus able to extend the track and have a reasonable
pits. In 2002 Mr Alonso from Steelcon/Alonso equipment hire bought the
Italio Club from the current committee and continued to operate the canteen
till the end of 2002. The club name was changed to the Spanish Club and
MIDBC had to negosiate with the Spanish Club for the land which it occupied
this would continue for some years down the track….
Come 2003 and the club was to start sign on
day and practice we had no power for the bore to fill the water truck as it
was disconnected, the toilets were locked and the canteen was closed so the
club had to hire a large generator, hire all the canteen and catering
equipment, hire toilets, and loan marquees for shade the pits was a little
bit squashed to say the least but the club battled on. The club then payed for
the installation of power poles ands line to the pump. The club then had
been given the chance to get a round in the Tropical North Queensland
Series only to be faced with the prospet of not even being able to hold a
club day. The club at this stage then contacted the owers of the old
Brothers football oval which was ATSIC and communicated a agreement to use
the land with Aboriginal and Islander Women’s in Sport (AIWIS).
The club, in repayment to the AIWIS for
letting them use the land went about in doing the following tasks for the
AIWIS: put in new 90mm polly pipe to the canteen, got some oval lights
going, cleaned and painted canteen, repaired all cisterns and pup in a
bench top and sinks. Installed a solar hot water system. Constructed an L
shaped spectator mound approx 160m long from approx 4000m2 of imported
earth from the airport expansion project. This allowed the club to then
upgrade the track to be able to hold a round of the North Queensland
Tropical Series. The club purchased canteen and catering equipment, built a
set of 23 self-penalising gates, constructed a announcers tower, a new
track that took a lot of plant equipment including a 992 loader to build.
Painting tyres and canteen was also completed.
The on the first tropical round in Mount Isa
the club was flooded with riders and spectators and also while racing was
being conducted a large crane was disassembling the large old grandstand,
what a spectical.
2003-2005 An ongoing task of making a second
oval for the AIWIS was started by letting a contractor dump earth from a
levelling task next to Hastings Dearing and supported by the Army in
conducting operator training to level and shape the new oval over 2 years
2003-2004 saw the new grand stand and shade
installed by AIWIS and set the seen for the club in the tropical series
with one of the best ground for spectators, camping and catering.
Gates were extended to 30 gates in 2004 for
continuation with Tropical series. The track change slightly with the
widening the start straight to accommodate the 30 gates and moving one
table top to the finish line
The club has run enduro’s in the past thanks
to land owners providing a venue and support. We look forward to holding
them in the future.
The club has a small but prominent moto
trials members that travel to the major events.
The club runs practice and coaching days
after receiving grants to develop coaches in the club. Officials are also a
integral part of the club with grant money from Queensland Government
department Sport and Recreation and funding from Motorcycling Queensland
allowing us to run meeting and help regional towns to also get their
officials trained as well (Boulia, Julia Creek).
In 2003 the club started a interclub series
with Longreach and run well till Julia Creek got their track approved and
now it has grown to a tri series.
2004 saw a large contingent of riders from
the club taking out a lot of trophies from the Tropical Series – Yahoo..
2005 the club put the old bus up on the end
of the northern spectator mound so the scorers could have clear view of the
track without getting blown away as was the case when they had a tent!!!
2005 saw the demise
of tropical series from the club to hold it in 2006 and every year after
that by the Tropical committee voting Mount Isa would only be able to hold
it every 2nd year. 2007 will be the next time the club will be
eligible to hold it again.
